Household labour

The record a home keeps when it employs someone.

HousePay is that record for a nanny, cleaner, gardener, or casual worker. This site explains the labour practice behind it in South Africa, the United Kingdom, the United Arab Emirates, and the United States, and what the employer and the employee each get from keeping it.

The wage floors, contributions, and leave rules below are the figures loaded in HousePay on 8 October 2026. A household still checks the official source before it relies on a number.

For the employer

The employer keeps one household book: who works, which days count, the wage that was entered, the signed contract, and the permission to work. A payslip is drafted from those days. Pay under the statutory floor stays a draft, and so does a payslip when a required work permission is missing or out of date. Proof of payment is stored with the wage. The month and the year sit beside the household budget, with cleaner, nanny, garden, and maintenance kept apart.

For the employee

The employee has a payslip for the period, with ordinary time kept apart from overtime, Sunday work, and public holidays where that country uses those buckets. In South Africa the same payslip carries the tax-year running total and the annual leave accrued and taken. The signed contract stays on the person and can be opened again. Nationality is the country the household chooses. It is never inferred from a name. A casual job keeps a description of the work and the amount paid.
